The novel compound 17α-methyl-9#,10α- pregn-4-ene-3,20-dione is prepared by reductively methylating a derivative of 9#,10α-4,16- diene-3,20-dione in which the 3-keto group is protected (e.g. 3,3 - ethylenedioxy - 9#,10α- pregna - 5,16 - dien - 20 - one) to obtain a corresponding derivative of the required product (e.g. the novel compound 3,3-ethylenedioxy - 17α- methyl - 9#,10α- pregn - 5 - en- 20-one) the protecting group of which is finally split off. The reductive methylation may be effected with lithium in ammonia and a methyl halide. Pharmaceutical compositions suitable for oral or parenteral administration comprise 17α- methyl - 9#,10α- pregn - 4 - ene - 3,20 - dione (which possesses progestational and gestagenic activity) in admixture with a compatible pharmaceutical carrier.</p> |
