The method involves forming a bag-like tube from a web of packaging material. The suction device is provided in region in front of longitudinal connection device. The gas present in region provided subsequent to the longitudinal connection device is sucked out through suction opening. An arm is provided to lead into the bag-like tube and is extended in the conveying direction up to the suction opening. The region of suction element (11) is arranged outside the bag-like tube and is cooperated with longitudinal connection device to form longitudinal connection.
