Strontium hydroxide is obtained from strontianite ores by calcining, preferably below 1150 DEG C., thus converting strontianite (SrCO3) to strontia (SrO), quenching the calcine in water forming strontium hydroxide, forming a solution of the strontium hydroxide in water at above 85 DEG C., separating the solution from the insoluble calcine at above 85 DEG C., and cooling the solution to below 85 DEG C., preferably to 60-85 DEG C., to precipitate the hydroxide. The ore is preferably obtained from Kangankunde Hill, Malawi, and may be calcined at 1000 DEG C. The liquor remaining after cooling still contains some strontium hydroxide, and may be re-used for the quenching until it contains too much impurity. |
