A securing device for telescoping members in gymnastic apparatus comprises an inner cylindrical piston slidably received in an outer hollow column, the outer surface of the piston being provided with a series of spaced, circumferential grooves, wherein each groove receives a number of ball detents which are disposed in a ring of circumferentially spaced apertures in the outer column, said balls being retained in engagement with a selected groove by means of a retaining collar which fits over the outer column. The collar is provided with an inner annular ramp to retain the ball detent in engagement with the grooves, thus locking the piston and column against vertical movement but permitting rotation of the piston within the column. The collar is raised to free the balls from the grooves thus permitting vertical movement of the piston within the column. A separate clamping device is provided to rigidly lock the piston and the column. The device is illustrated in Figure 1 wherein a piston 24 is provided with circumferential grooves 30, this piston fitting within a column 20. The ball detents 28 are forced into engagement with the grooves by retaining collar 32. Upward movement of this collar will, in view of the inner annular ramp 34, permit disengagement of ball and groove. A separate clamping device is provided in the housing 76 and comprises blocks 52 and 54 which can be clamped on to the piston. |
