Amido groups are introduced into styrene polymers by treatment with a carbamoyl halide complex with a metallic halide Friedel-Crafts catalyst, e.g. AlCl3, AlBr3, AlI3, FeCl3 o ZnCl2, in the presence of an inert solvent, e.g. benzene. The complex may be derived from carbamoyl chloride and AICI3 using 1 mol. of the complex per 208 g. of polystyrene, which may be prepared by bulk polymerization. |
