The method involves detecting intensity of rainfall by a rain sensor (20), and terminating a power reduced operation mode of a wind turbine (10) or stopping switching of the wind turbine to the operation mode when the detected intensity of the rainfall exceeds a predetermined threshold value. The wind turbine is operated in the operating mode at a predetermined day time and/or night time when the rainfall is not detected by the rain sensor, where the rain sensor is arranged in a housing (14) of the wind turbine. An independent claim is also included for a wind turbine comprising a rain sensor for detecting rainfall.
