Phenols are stabilized against oxidation by incorporating a small proportion of at least one trivalent arsenic compound, e.g. arsenic trioxide or sodium arsenite. The arsenic compound may be used alone or in association with (a) an aromatic o-hydroxycarboxylic acid of the formula in which X denotes a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group of 1-5 carbon atoms or a carboxyl group, and (or) (b) a saturated aliphatic polycarboxylic acid. Specified acids of these types include salicylic, hydroxyisophthalic, oxalic and citric acids. The composition may also include a chelating agent, e.g. 1,2-diaminocyclohexane- N,N,N<SP>1</SP>,N<SP>1</SP>-tetraacetic acid. Specified phenols which may be stabilized include phenol, chloro- and bromo-phenols, alkylphenols, naphthols, dihydroxydiphenylmethanes, resorcinol and pyrogallol. Comparative examples are given. |
