The unit has an intermediate charge air cooler (8) between a low-pressure compressor (2/2) and a high-pressure compressor (3/2). An exhaust gas discharge of an internal combustion engine (1) drives a high-pressure turbine (3/1) and a low-pressure turbine (2/1). An expander (21) converts a vaporous work medium into useful mechanical energy. A cooled condenser (20) receives the work medium from the expander and returns the work medium into a liquid aggregate state, where the work medium from the condenser is fed back to a hydraulically decoupled heat recovery circuit (11) by a pump (12).
