A method is described for detecting faults, such as a blocked rotor or a stalled motor, in a synchronous reluctance machine, a permanent magnet assisted synchronous reluctance machine or a salient-poled permanent magnet machine. The method relies on detecting the level of a defined harmonic of the motor frequency. If this harmonic is above a given threshold, then the existence of the fault is likely. In the case of a blocked rotor, the relevant harmonic is twice the operating frequency of the motor (for a 4-pole motor).
|
