A process of producing a thin magnetic sheet having a large proportion of cube-on-face oriented grains from a thicker sheet with [001] fibre texture comprising not more than 6% by weight silicon, and/or not more than 8% by weight aluminium, and/or not more than 5% by weight molybdenum with the balance being iron except for small amounts of impurities, said process comprises the steps of (1) cold rolling the fibre texture sheet to effect a reduction in thickness of from 40% to 80%, (2) annealing the resulting thinner sheet at a temperature between 400 DEG C. to 600 DEG C. for 4 to 48 hours to obtain partial primary crystallization, (3) completing the anneal at a temperature between 700 DEG C. to 1000 DEG C. for a period between 1/2 hour to 12 hours to obtain substantially complete primary recrystallization and (4) repeating the steps (1), (2) and (3) at least once in the order set forth whereby a thin magnetic sheet is produced which has at least 40% of the grains with (100) [001] orientation with the crystallographic direction [001] being in the direction of rolling. The thicker sheet with [001] fibre texture is produced from a hot rolled plate by cold rolling the plate to effect a 40% to 80% reduction in thickness, annealing the reduced plate at a temperature of from 700 DEG C. to 1000 DEG C. for from 1 to 5 hours in wet hydrogen to provide recrystallization and decarbonization and annealing the recrystallized plate at a temperature of from 1100 DEG C. to 1300 DEG C. for from 6 to 48 hours in dry hydrogen whereby the [001] fibre texture sheet is obtained. A thin magnetic sheet produced by the above process is subjected to a final anneal at a temperature from 1100 DEG C. to 1300 DEG C. Several examples of the process are given in the Specification. Specification 882,810 is referred to. |
