When a tongs device for scrap-metal is raised by a bar 1, Fig. 1, attached to a member 4 with arms 9, the bar 1 slides upwards through a member 3 with arms 6 thereby pushing outwards toggle-links 7, 10 attached to the arms 9, 6 and turning jaws 12 about their pivots 19 to close them. The jaws are opened by a rope 24 which raises a loop 23 attached to arms 6. This slides the member 3 up the bar 1 and pulls the toggle-links 7, 10 inwards. Fig. 6 shows an embodiment in which the jaws are initially closed by a rope 30 and loop 29 which passes round pulleys 28, pulls the members 3 and 4 together and pushes the toggle-links outwards. The jaws may be tapered so that they lie entirely within the profile of a grooved block of scrap-metal Fig. 4 (not shown). |
