A method of determining the temperature or temperature change in a region of the Earths subsurface comprises obtaining at least one elastic property (e.g. seismic velocities, bulk or shear modulus) from seismic data acquired in at least one survey of said region; and using the obtained elastic property and a dry rock model to determine said temperature or temperature change. The dry rock model can have at least one temperature-dependent elastic property component based on a dry rock structure, and may be a viscoelastic model (e.g. Cole-Cole model). The component can be based on a rock structure comprising rock grains and grain cement, where the grain cement comprises oil. The method is useful for monitoring temperature changes during a thermal production technique which uses steam to heat the formation, such as steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD).
|
