1,242,244. Treating multi-strand steel cable. M. T. QUERALTO. 20 Sept., 1968 [23 Sept., 1967], No. 44892/68. Heading D1T. A method of treating multi-strand steel cable comprises freely passing the cable through a heat treatment zone under a tension sufficient to produce a permanent stretching of the cable. In Fig. 1 the cable 3 passes freely through a heating zone 6 whilst under tension, this tension being set up by a winding drum 5 pulling the cable over a plurality of rollers 2 causing the cable to follow a predetermined sinuous path. The setting of the rollers 2 is adjustable by means of devices 4. The cable may pass through a cooling zone 7. The tension may be between 55 and 85 per cent. of the breaking load of the cable. It has been found that:-1, The elastic limit of the cable is increased; 2, The elongation or stretching of the cable before it breaks also increases; 3, The initial stretching with small loads is reduced since the wires are in contact with each other; 4, The cable is straightened, facilitating its laying in sheaths; 5, The wires forming the cable fit each other.
|
