PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thickener capable of exhibiting excellent thickening property with excellent water solubility.SOLUTION: There is provided a thickener containing a vinyl alcohol-based polymer (A) and having a ratio of a weight average molecular weight (Mw) to a number average molecular weight (Mn) of the vinyl alcohol-based polymer (A), (Mw/Mn), of 3 or more and 8 or less and the ratio of the weight average molecular weight (Mw) to the number average molecular weight (Mn) of the vinyl alcohol-based polymer (B) obtained by treatment of the vinyl alcohol-based polymer (A) in a sodium hydroxide solution at 40°C for 1 hour, (Mw/Mn), of 2 or more and less than 3. |
