PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical waveguide element capable of converting a spot size, separating orthogonal polarization components, and outputting each of the separated polarization components from a different output port.SOLUTION: An optical waveguide element comprises a silicon substrate 10, a lower clad layer 12, an upper clad layer 14, a first waveguide core 16, a second waveguide core 18, and a third waveguide core 20. The first waveguide core and the second waveguide core are arranged in parallel on the lower clad layer, and formed surrounded by the lower clad layer and the upper clad layer. The third waveguide core is formed on the first waveguide core and the second waveguide core across the upper clad layer. A center-to-center distance between the first waveguide core and the second waveguide core continuously widens from an input side toward an output side. The width of the first waveguide core is narrower than the width of the second waveguide core. The width of the second waveguide core continuously widens from the input side toward the output side. |
