1,139,553. Cross-linked polymers of diisocyanates. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 8 Nov., 1965 [9 Nov., 1964], No. 34457/68. Divided out of 1,139,551. Headings C3C, C3P and C3R. A diisocyanate of formula where A is a divalent aliphatic radical, n is 0 or an integer, Q is -ROOC.R 1 .COOR-, where R is a C 2-12 divalent aliphatic, alicyclic or aromatic group, which may be substituted and R 1 is a C 2-24 divalent olefinically unsaturated aliphatic group with the provisos that (1) when both R's are alkylene groups, R 1 is not the cis-vinylene group and (2) eachOCN- is at least 2 carbon atoms from the group -OOC.R 1 .COO-, is reacted with a compound containing at least 2 groups which are hydroxyl, primary or secondary amino or mixtures thereof in the presence of a vinyl polymerization catalyst. In examples, the diisocyanate was bis-(2-isocyanoethyl) fumarate which was mixed with styrene, methyl methacrylate, divinyl pimelate, ethyl acrylate, acrylonitrile or triallyl cyanurate and reacted with a condensate of propylene oxide and 1,2,6- hexanetriol, 1,13-tris-(hydroxyphenyl) propane, sorbitol or glycerol. The catalysts used were benzoyl peroxide and di-n-butyltin diacetate or lauroyl peroxide, and dibutyltin dilaurate, triethylamine, stannous or cobalt octoate. In an Example (11) a foam was prepared by carrying out the above reaction in the presence of a foaming agent, i.e. a mixture of trichloromonofluoromethane, a surfactant, i.e. a polysiloxane-polyoxyalkylene block copolymer.
