Disclosed are a method and an apparatus for recognizing tire damage, such as crack, by analyzing an image taken by a camera. If an apparatus for recognizing the tire damage receives a tire image, it searches an image to be compared from a database by use of at least one of characters, numbers, and symbols positioned on the side of the tire image, and then determines whether the tire is damaged on the basis of the difference between the tire image and the image to be compared.
