[Problem] To provide a Faraday rotator which is capable of preventing the degradation of the isolation function in an optical isolator even when the rotator is used in a high-powered laser having a wavelength of 1.1 µm or less and a power of 1 W or more, and which can be produced with high efficiency. [Solution] The Faraday rotator is constituted by: a nonmagnetic garnet substrate (4); a bismuth-substituted rare earth iron garnet film (1) grown by a liquid phase epitaxial method on both surfaces of the nonmagnetic garnet substrate; and a heat radiating sapphire crystal substrate (2) adhered to each surface of the bismuth-substituted rare earth iron garnet film. The absorption coefficient of the bismuth-substituted rare earth iron garnet film with respect to light having a wavelength of 1.06 µm is 9 cm-1 or less, and the difference in film thickness between the bismuth-substituted rare earth iron garnet films grown on both surfaces of the nonmagnetic garnet substrate is 10 µm or less. |
