In a boiler having a cylindrical outer shell 1 forming a water chamber 2 around a substantially cylindrical combustion chamber 3 with a closed end 4, the gases from which flow through a header 7 to gas flues 6, the open end 5 of the combustion chamber is of oval or part oval shape. The flues 6 are of oval cross-section and their depth decreases along their length. The sides of the flues are pressed inwards to form heat transfer ribs 10. In Fig. 5 the upper part of the mouth 35 is partly closed by a wall 34 and the front cover for the boiler is formed with a water space 30 and finned water tubes 32. The cover is hinged to the casing 1 and the water space connected to space 2 by flexible pipes 37. The fins on the tubes 31 may be formed by helically wound corrugated strips 40, 41, Fig. 8.
