Provided is a high performance permanent magnet. The permanent magnet has a composition represented by the compositional formula RpFeqMrCutCo100-p-q-r-t (in the formula, R is at least one type of element selected from among rare earth elements, M is at least one type of element selected from among Zr, Ti and Hf, p is a value that satisfies the relationship 10.5 ≤ p ≤ 12.5 atom %, q is a value that satisfies the relationship 23 ≤ q ≤ 40 atom %, r is a value that satisfies the relationship 0.88 ≤ r ≤ 4.5 atom %, and t is a value that satisfies the relationship 4.5 ≤ t ≤ 10.7 atom %) and has a metal structure that contains a Th2Zn17 type crystal phase and a copper-rich phase in which the concentration of copper is higher than in the Th2Zn17 type crystal phase. In a cross section that includes the c axis of the Th2Zn17 type crystal phase, the number of intersection points between copper-rich phases present within an area measuring 1 μm square is not lower than 10.
