<p>PURPOSE: An apparatus for diagnosing an electric contactor and a method thereof is provided to determine whether an electric contactor has a trouble or not regardless of the characteristics of a device included in a target apparatus. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus(100) for diagnosing an electric contactor includes a battery(102), a high potential electric contactor(103), a low potential electric contactor(104), a common diagnosis resistance(105), a switch part(106), a resistance voltage measurement part(110), and a diagnostic controller(113). The battery includes one or more cells and is a secondary battery like a lithium ion battery, a lithium polymer battery, a nickel cadmium battery, a nickel hydrogen battery, or a nickel zinc cell , etc. A load(117) is an electric device like a video camera, a portable telephone, a portable PC, a PMP, a MP3 player, a motor of an electric vehicle or a hybrid vehicle, a DC to DC converter, etc. In case the high potential electric contactor and the low potential electric contactor operate normally, the voltage of the battery is applied to the common diagnosis resistance. The common diagnosis resistance monitors the applied voltage and determines whether the high potential electric contactor and the low potential electric contactor have problems or not. The switch part includes a first switch part(107) and a second switch part(108). The first switch part is turned on if the common diagnosis resistance is connected between the high potential electric contactor and the cathode terminal of the battery. The second switch part is turned on if the common diagnosis resistance is connected between the low electric contactor and the anode terminal of the battery. The resistance voltage measurement part measures a voltage applied to the common diagnosis resistance in a first connection mode and a second common connection mode made by the selective connection by the selective connection of the switch part. The diagnosis controller determines whether the high potential electric contactor and the low potential electric contactor have problems or not by using a first voltage and a second voltage measured in the resistance voltage measurement part.
