A grading apparatus 10 for grading a plurality of items, the grading apparatus 10 including a barrel 11 for receiving items to be graded and a drive 5 arrangement 26 for driving the barrel 11 during item grading to rotate about a generally horizontal axis and to vibrate. The barrel 11 is at least partly immersed in a liquid during item grading, so that the liquid enters the interior of the barrel. The barrel 11 includes a grading portion 46,47 having a plurality of apertures 45 which are configured so that items up to a predetermined size 10 pass through the apertures 45 and exit from the barrel 11 during item grading. The apparatus 10 further includes a retarding facility 51,52 for retarding travel of items through the grading portion 46,47 during item grading.
