Some paxels corresponding to a first predetermined fixation point are digitized with higher ENoB than the other paxels. A foveated image is generated.

An imaging method, comprising the unordered steps of: a. receiving an image for processing, the image comprising a plurality of pixels, each respective pixel at a predetermined pixel pitch; b. receiving a plurality of image intensity signals corresponding to an intensity of the received image; c. receiving at least a portion of the image intensity signals at readout circuitry responsive to an image intensity per pixel; d. dividing at least a portion of the image into a plurality of fixed paxels, each respective paxel comprising a rectilinear collection of pixels, wherein each paxel has a first length having a first predetermined number of rows and a second width having a second predetermined number of columns; e. providing the plurality of fixed paxels to respective plurality of configurable Analog to Digital Converters (ADCs), each ADC responsive to a respective plurality of paxels, wherein the plurality of ADCs are configurable to generate respective ADC output signals based at least in part on implementing a tradeoff between Effective Number of Bits (ENoB) and power consumption while maintaining a substantially fixed spatial frequency; f setting at least a portion of the plurality of configurable ADCs such that the paxels corresponding to a first predetermined fixation point are digitized with a higher ENoB than the other paxels; and g. generating a foveated image based at least in part on the received image and at least in part on at least one of ENoB, power consumption, spatial frequency, and fixation point.
