METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR RETRIEVING SEA SURFACE WIND USING PASSIVE MICROWAVE SENSORS ONBOARD SATELLITE

<p>The purpose of the present invention is to provide a system for calculating the speed of sea surface wind, which is capable of calculating the speed of sea surface wind by measurements of the satellite with a passive microwave sensor. The present invention relates to a method and system for calculating information on the speed of sea surface wind above sea level using data measured by a passive microwave sensor mounted in the satellite. More particularly, a method includes: converting a brightness temperature measured through a vertical polarization observation channel of the passive microwave sensor onboard satellite into a simulation brightness temperature; calculating vertical polarization reflectivity from the simulation brightness temperature; calculating horizontal polarization reflectivity computed by a radiative transfer model using digital model data; calculating the roughness of the surface of the sea from the calculated vertical polarization reflectivity and horizontal polarization reflectivity; determining the relationship between the calculated roughness of the surface of the sea and the size of sea surface wind; and calculating the speed of the sea surface wind.</p>
