Novel compounds of formula their novel bis-analogues of formula and certain novel N-oxides of compounds of formula wherein R 1 and R 2 are C 1-6 alkyl, R is H or C 1-6 alkyl, R 3 is H or CH 3 , Q represents from 1 to 3 C 1-6 alkyl, OH, C 1-6 alkanoylamino, C 1-6 alkylamino, benzyl, C 1-6 alkoxy, C 1-6 alkylmercapto, C 1-6 alkylsulphinyl, C 1-6 alkylsulphonyl, or trihalomethyl substituents, Ar is a 1-2 ringed aryl radical, e.g. phenyl, naphthyl, biphenylyl, pyridyl pyrimidinyl, pyrazinyl, pyridazinyl, quinolyl and coumarinyl radicals which may also be substituted by Q, or NO 2 or benzyloxy radicals, Ar1 is phenylene or A11-Z-Ar11, where Ar11 is phenylene and Z is a direct bond, S, S-S, O, NH, C 1-6 alkyl N, C=O or C 1-6 alkylene; Ar1 may also bear substituents similar to those for Ar; are prepared by reaction of the amine ArNHR, NH 2 Ar1NH 2 or Q substituted-2-aminopyridine N-oxide, with a trialkyl orthoformate or a trialkyl orthoacetate and an alkylidene malonate. 2 - Amino - 6 - methylpyridine N - oxide is prepared by hydrolysis of 2-acetylamino-6- methylpyridine-N-oxide which was itself prepared by action of peracetic acid on 2-acetylamino-6-methyl pyridine.
