[Also in Division H2] Apparatus for crimping a plurality of electrical connectors 4 simultaneously to the ends of juxtaposed wires (not shown), comprises juxtaposed crimping anvils 39, 40 towards which the connectors are fed along a path, dies for crimping the connectors against the anvils, a device for severing a plurality of connectors simultaneously from a strip of connectors at a position upstream of the anvils, and means to feed the severed connectors simultaneously on to the anvils. Thus widely spaced connectors Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), for inserting over rectangular posts, and having limbs 7, 8 for crimping to the insulation and conductor respectively, may be severed in pairs from a carrier strip 2, moved into contact with each other and fed to the juxtaposed dies. Shearing.-The pair of connectors is severed from the strip 2 and the end of the strip from the remainder between a fixed blade 65, Fig. 7, a movable blade 72 on a carrier 63 and a further blade (not shown). A screw 28, Fig. 3, on the press-ram 12 lowers the blade 72 against return springs 80 and movement of the blade is limited by a bolt 78 engaging a slot 76. Feeding; workholding.-A pneumatic cylinder 92 reciprocates two spring-biased feed-fingers 100, 108, one (100) for advancing the trailing connector of the pair of severed connectors into engagement with the leading connector and then advancing the pair on to the anvils, and the other (108) for advancing the strip of connectors by means of holes (9) in the strip (2). The finger 100 has a connector guide rail 106 and a recess 116, Fig. 7, receiving guide rails 118, Fig. 4. A pawl on the finger 108 is guided by a slot 113 in a rail 67. A valve controlling the feed cylinder 92 is operated at the end of the return stroke of the ram. Guide rails 66, 67, Fig. 4, define a channel 68 for the connectors. A resilient hold-down 70, a hold-down 84, a drag plate 86 and spring-pressed connector clamps 54 are provided. The clamps 54 are carried on a slide which is withdrawn against a spring (50), Fig. 5 (not shown), by engagement between a cam (17) on the ram and the end (52) of the slide. The ram is driven, by a motor, through a onerevolution clutch operated by a pedal. Wires to be crimped are positioned on each side of a separating blade 34, Fig. 3, and located in the arms of the connectors. The dies 18 (22), Fig. 5 (not shown), on the ram each have a pair of crimping recesses 19, one recess for each connector. Also on the ram is a plate 34 formed with a slot 25, the sides of which press the wires against the blade 34.</p> |
