A cutting tool comprises a holder 1 and a cutting bit 2 which is adjustable in a recess 11 in the tool holder shank, the bit having a cutting region 5 and a body portion 6 which has a slot 7 therein, and a clamping screw 4 which passes through the slot 7 in the bit and threadably engages a bore in the base of the recess, the bit being clamped between the head 13 of the screw and the base of the recess. In a modified form a seating plate 23 and chip breaker 25 are provided, the seating plate being secured to the base of the recess screws 30, 31. The base of the recess or the surface of the seating plate (when used) may be roughened or serrated 39 to provide a positive grip between the bit and the surface or alternatively the bearing surface may be covered with a material having a high coefficient of friction. In a further modification, strips having upstanding ribs are inserted in the surface of the bearing member to effect secure engagement between the bit and its seating. The slot 7 formed in the bit may have a closed internal periphery or be open at its rear end and may have vertical or inclined side faces.</p> |
