Chlorinated butyl rubber is vulcanized in the presence of a minor proportion of a mixture of zinc oxide, magnesium oxide, a thiazyl sulphide, a thiuram sulphide, and/or a thiocarbamate and in the absence of added elemental sulphur. A preliminary blending of the rubber and magnesium oxide at from 100 DEG to 250 DEG F. is preferred, and after the addition of the remaining components the composition is vulcanized at temperatures up to 450 DEG F. Thiuram and thiazyl sulphides and thiocarbamates are listed and conventional rubber additives such as carbon black, stearic acid, hydrocarbon plasticizer oil, 2,21-methylene bis (4-methyl-6-t-butyl phenol), stearic acid, a 4-octyl phenol formaldehyde reaction product and 2,6-dimethylol-4-octyl phenol resin may be blended in prior to vulcanization. The vulcanizate may be used in the manufacture of pneumatic tyres, curing bags or diaphragms, belting, steam hose, electrical insulation, sponge rubber, channel strips and proofed goods. |
