Apparatus and method for producing substantially circular portions from a sheet of malleable material

An apparatus 10 for producing a plurality of substantially circular portions 40 from a sheet 11 of malleable material such as a dough is provided. The apparatus 10 includes a conveyor 12, 32 for conveying a sheet 11 of dough and a cutter 20 for cutting the sheet 11 into portions 25 which tessellate. A press 36 for presses the portions into substantially circular shapes. The cutter is operable to form the tesselatable portions such that the thickness of each portion is non-uniform. The press may be in the form of a second conveyor arranged such that the portions pass between the first and second conveyors.
