<p>A gas sensor comprises an outer casing 301, 302 having one end 304 adapted to be exposed to a stream of particles; at least one electro-chemical sensor 500 for sensing chemicals in a gas; and a gas permeable material 504 positioned between an exposed end of the outer casing and the electro-chemical sensor, for allowing gas to permeate the electro-chemical sensor from the exposed end. An inner housing 501 may be provided, which contains the electrochemical sensor, and which is temperature controlled by a Peltier effect heat pump 506. A method of sensing gases in a gas stream may comprise placing a gas sensor adjacent a stream of gas, determining a level of measured gas in the gas stream, comparing it with a predetermined safe level of gas, and generating an alert signal if the measured gas level exceeds the predetermined safe level of gas. The sensor may be used in corrosive environments, such as in chimneys, flues, or a coal mill, where it may be used to sense the level of carbon monoxide to provide an early indication of fire.</p> |
