A communication system is described in which system information is transmitted to communication devices 3, preferably including machine-type communication, MTC, devices, by a communication apparatus 5, in system information blocks (SIBs). The communication apparatus 5 configures at least one SIB, which may be a master information block, to include control information indicating how the SIBs will be transmitted. The control information may indicate which SIB transmission scheme is used to transmit the SIBs, the scheme relating to the size of the SIB; whether or not a SIB has been extended; or whether at least one further SIB will be transmitted. The control information may comprise at least one bit to indicate the transmission scheme. The different transmission schemes may involve repeating SIBs a different number of times. An extension indicator may indicate whether a SIB has been extended. A communication device is disclosed which attempts to decode SIBs in accordance with a first transmission scheme, and if unsuccessful, attempts to decode them using a different scheme. |
