Backlit display panel using IR proximity A display panel, configured to be backlit by infrared light and visible light, comprising: electronic circuitry configured to control transmission of visible light; and a plurality of discrete infrared light apertures configured to facilitate projection of a pattern of infrared light through the front face of the display panel for detecting an object in front of but not touching the front face of the display panel. The display panel may be opaque to infra-red light apart from at the window apertures, which may preferentially output IR rather than visible light. The windows may be located within black matrix between the colour sub-pixels of the color filter or within transparent colour sub-pixels. IR lightguides may be provided by support structures separating layers and may direct the IR to the front face using optics to change the pattern of projection for example into a light spot pattern. |
