<p>An apparatus for processing food waste at the premises of a kitchen comprises an inlet 12 for receiving the waste, a hopper 80 containing drying agent, a feed mechanism 86 for dispensing the drying agent, a comminuter 46,48 to comminute the received waste to provide comminuted waste, a dewatering device to dewater the comminuted waste to produce dewatered comminuted waste, a compressor to compress the dewatered comminuted waste to produce compressed waste, a mixer 88for mixing the compressed waste with drying agent delivered from the hopper to the mixer by the feed mechanism and an outlet to provide processed waste for collection. Ideally, the drying agent is a powder and may be cement, silica, lime or mortar. The comminuter preferably comprises a pair of contra-rotating blades or knives. The dewaterer and compressor comprise an Archimedean screw conveyor 608 in which the gap between the screw and the housing decreases in the compressor section. A method of processing food waste at premises of the kitchen comprises receiving the waste, comminuting the received waste to provide comminuted waste, dewatering the comminuted waste to provide dewatered waste, compressing the dewatered waste to produce compressed waste and mixing the compressed waste with a drying agent.</p> |
