<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical element, which can be manufactured easily and inexpensively, such as a high-quality color filter or an organic EL without display defects such as unevenness in film thickness of a functional layer, a void, and color mixture, in an application method, which can be used for a large substrate, such as an ink-jet method with high efficiency in using materials, and to provide a method for manufacturing the optical element. <P>SOLUTION: Partition patterns 20 partitioning off functional layer patterns are formed. An ink-repellent layer 22 is formed on the upper surface of each partition pattern 20. A spacer 40 having a columnar shape is formed in an opening area made by partitioning with the partition pattern 20.
