Stabilized dead-burnt dolomite is made from a mixture of raw, or dead-burnt at 900‹ C., dolomite with 2-5%, based on the weight of the dead-burnt product, of titanium dioxide by granulating until 90% passes a screen having 4900 meshes/sq. cm. and then firing at 1500‹ C. or higher. The granulated mixture is fired, e.g. in a rotary furnace at 1600-1800‹ C., as a slurry in water or as pressed briquettes made with very little or no water or with milk of burnt dolomite or of burnt magnesia. The titanium dioxide in the stabilized dolomite exists as Ca 3 Ti 2 O 4 which forms a eutectic mixture of melting point 1725‹ C. with the calcium oxide. The stabilized dolomite is used for ramming mixes, shaped and tarred pieces and fire brick and may also contain chromite and magnesite.</p> |
