The machine tool has workpiece spindle unit (20) having a workpiece spindle (24) and a receptacle (28), which is arranged on machine frame (10). A workpiece spindle drive (25) is rotated around a workpiece spindle axis (26). A tool carrier unit (30) having a turret (70) is arranged on the machine frame. A tool is moved along Y-direction by interpolation between position-controlled movement of the product in the tool working position along X or Z-direction and position-controlled rotation of the turret portion (74) about the turret axis (76). The turret is provided with rotatable turret portion that is rotated in relation to turret housing (72) about a turret axis. A tool carrier base (32) is supported at machine frame by movement system, such that receptacle and working tool are movably controlled relative to each other in working position. An engine controller (50) is provided to control the movements of tool in working position relative to workpiece in receptacle. The turret housing and receptacle are positioned parallel to the direction of the workpiece spindle axis. An independent claim is included for method for operating machine tool.
