An apparatus comprises control circuitry 12 to enable and disable energy transfer from charging circuitry 14 to be stored in a rechargeable apparatus 100 such as a hand-portable device. When the apparatus is in the non-charging state indication circuitry 16 prompts a user to bring the rechargeable apparatus towards the apparatus for charging. The charging system can be inductive comprising primary and secondary transformer coils, using wireless energy transfer. Charging can be automatic when the apparatus is within a charging range that can be within one wavelength of an oscillating current. The indication can be visual, by varying colour pattern; be triggered by wireless communication circuitry in the apparatus; be individual to plural rechargeable devices; depend upon the identity of the device and be programmed via the device. The trigger event and characteristics of the indication may be programmed by a user and depend upon charge level and the proximity of the apparatus. |
