摘要 <PICT:1058092/C6-C7/1> <PICT:1058092/C6-C7/2> <PICT:1058092/C6-C7/3> A metallic strand is coated with a molten metal, particularly aluminium on carbon steel wire, by hot dipping wherein the strand 11 emerging from the molten coating metal 10 pulls with it a meniscus 15 of metal covered with an oxide skin which is continuously disrupted to cause particles of the skin to be homogenized with the metal in the meniscus by applying vibratory energy, e.g. at a frequency of 60 to 500 c/s, only to the meniscus such as by means of a vibrating element in contact only withthe meniscus. Preferably the strand emerges from the coating metal 10 through a ring 12 immersed in the metal to have a portion 13 wetted by the metal thereby preventing the oxide skin on top of the metal from being drawn out. The vibrating element may be an axially reciprocating rod, Figs. 1 and 5 (not shown), an oscillating fork-like member 21 having arms 22 and 23 (see Figs. 3 and 3a), or a ring 17 which reciprocates diametrally or axially, Fig. 2 (not shown), or oscillates orbitally as accomplished by a steel ball 36 caused to run around inside an annular chamber 35 of member 33 by compressed air or other gas supplied through a tangential passage 38 (see Fig. 6).
