A reinforced metal fibre mat in which a pervious metal reinforcing sheet is embedded in at least one surface of a felted body of intersecting randomly disposed metal fibres is made by sintering together the metal fibres and the reinforcing sheet. The openings of the reinforcing sheet are several times larger than the openings or pores in the felted body. The metal fibres are of stainless steel 15 microns in diameter and may be felted from a slurry as disclosed in Specification 821,690. Stainless steel reinforcing sheets are placed on the mat on one or both faces, compacted and sintered to form the composite shown in Fig. 3 with the reinforcing sheets 4 and 6 embedded in the mat 2. The fibres may be deposited directly on to one reinforcing sheet or may first be felted and placed on the sheet after felting.</p> |
