1,251,193. Coating with intermetallic Mn-Bi. HONEYWELL Inc. Nov.19, 1968 [Dec.14, 1967], No.54903/68. Heading C7F. A coating of intermetallic Mn-Bi is formed on substrates such as mica, ether layered silicates corundum and glass, by vacuum depositing or sputtering a bismuth layer and then a manganese layer over the bismuth and heating the deposit. The deposition is carried out at a vacuum of 10<SP>-4</SP> to 10<SP>-7</SP> mms. Hg the bismuth and manganese being vapourised from separate sources, the weight ratio of manganese to bismuth in the sources being 1:1.5 to 1:3. The substrate is maintained at room temperature during deposition and a coating thickness of 200-3000Š is formed, The heat treatment is carried out at 200‹ -400‹ C. preferably in vacuum and a protective coating of SiO or SiO 2 may be formed over the Mn-Bi. An epitaxial coating of Mn-Bi is formed if mica or corundum are the substrates. The coating has improved magnetic and magneto optic properties. |
