A life-raft inflation valve 48 comprises an inlet 54 for connection to a source of compressed gas, such as a mixture of carbon dioxide and nitrogen, an outlet 56 or 57 formed so as to merge smoothly with the inlet passage, and a valve closure member 66. The latter is slidably mounted in a sleeve 63 provided with a loading spring 65 and screwed into the valve body. Screw-threaded inserts 60, 61 have orifices 58, 59 through which liquefied gas from the outlets 56, 57 can evaporate and expand into the buoyancy chambers to which the valve is clamped by a nut 53 and a ring 52. Two valves may be connected by flexible tubing and a Y-piece to a common gas cylinder. The sum of the crosssectional areas of the outlets 56, 57 is equal to the cross-sectional area of the inlet 54 so that no expansion and hence freezing, takes place in the valve which may be made from nylon, polypropylene or metal. |
