[Classes 2 (ii) and 2 (iii)] Plastic and coating compositions containing mixed alkyd and aminocriazine resins are prepared by mixing a solution of a polyhydric alcohol-polycarboxylic acid resin in an organic solvent with a solution in an organic solvent of an aminotriazine aldehyde condensation product, preferably a melamine-formaldehyde condensation product, in which the aminotriazine has been reacted with the aldehyde in molecular ratios of 1:3.5 to 1:4.5, and preferably in the presence of a mild alkaline catalyst at a pH between 7.0 and 9.5. Specified aminotriazines are melamine, diamino 1.3.5 triazine, ammeline, ammelide, mono-amino 1.3.5 triazine, 2.4.6 triethyl-triamino 1.3.5 triazine, and polynuclear triazine compounds of the secondary amine type, and these compounds, singly or in admixture, may be condensed with formaldehyde, paraformaldehyde, acetaldehyde, paraldehyde, benzaldehyde or furfural, alone or in the presence of organic solvents such as glycerol, glycol, butanol, benzene, xylene, toluol or mineral spirits. Optional additions to the blends of aminotriazine-aldehyde condensation products with alkyd resins, are pigments, e.g. titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, fillers, plasticizers, driers, urea-formaldehyde resins, nitrocellulose, china wood oil, castor oil and chlorinated rubber, and the compositions may be used in the formulation of lacquers, varnishes, enamels, printing inks and binders. Examples are given of the preparation of melamine-formaldehyde resins, glycerolphthalic anhydride resins modified with castor oil or with soya bean fatty acids, and of blends thereof. |
