An undergound monorail locomotive 1 comprises two bogies 7a, 7 of which one (or both) bogie 7 has hydraulic motors 29 which drive one or two single or duplex rubber-tyred wheels 14 and which are supplied with fluid by an engine-driven pump 9, one or two single or duplex counter-pressure wheels 17 being provided on a beam 20 pivoted to hydraulic piston-and-cylinder units 21 which urge the wheels 14 and 17 to grip the flanges 12 of the rail elements 10, and stabilizing wheels 28 engaging the webs 11 of the rail elements 10. The locomotive 1 is articulated at 16a to a load-carrying vehicle 2. The rail elements 10 are articulated end-to-end by coupling means described in Specification 1,159,746. The upper and/or lower faces of the flanges 12 may or may not be horizontal. Fluid is supplied to the units 21 by the pump 9 or a manual screw mechanism. The locomotive body may be articulated at its centre and supported thereat by a bogie. Single wide driving and counter pressure wheels 14, 17 may be used. Where two single or duplex driving wheels are used, one or two single or duplex counter-pressure wheels may be used. |
