1,195,280. Apparatus for peeling onions. LESLIE A. PARSONS & SONS Ltd. 13 Dec., 1968 [29 Dec., 1967], No. 59254/67. Heading A4C. [Also in Division B8] Apparatus suitable for peeling onions comprises a hopper 10 and a trough 12 adapted to feed a continuous stream of onions into the open end of a horizontal tube 15, and openings 17 in the tube through which fluid under pressure is passed so as to convey the onions along the tube and remove the skins therefrom. The fluid may be air, water or steam and reaches the openings via an inlet 20 and a manifold 19. The openings are inclined and are arranged in various patterns, Figs. 3-8 (not shown) which cause the onions to be sucked and whirled along the tube. The stems of the onions are removed before they are placed in the hopper and the onions may be topped and tailed before or after peeling. The interior surface of the tube may be roughened at 16 to scratch or cut the onions skins; alternatively the skins may be weakened by slitting with a knife or knives or by flame treatment. The trough 12 is vibrated by a device 14. The tube may be straight or curved, e.g. spirally. |
