The present invention relates to a new wireless control apparatus for heavy equipment which controls the heavy equipment in a wireless environment, acknowledges an operation state, adjusts an operation speed of the heavy equipment, and prevents power consumption of a battery during non-use, and method of controlling the wireless control apparatus. In order to accomplish this, the wireless control apparatus according to the present invention is characterized in comprising a wireless remote controller and an appliance control means. The wireless remote controller includes: a speed adjuster for adjusting an operation speed of the heavy equipment according to a user manipulation; a manipulation unit having a plurality of function buttons for moving the heavy equipment in respective directions or stopping the heavy equipment according to a manipulation of a worker; a remote control unit which generates a related control signal or turns on/off a power source according to the manipulation performed in the manipulation unit; and a transmitting unit which transmits a control signal generated by the remote control unit. The appliance control means includes: a receiving unit which is provided on the heavy equipment and receives various control signals transmitted from the transmitting unit of the wireless remote controller; an operation control unit which controls the operation of corresponding heavy equipment based on the control signal according to the manipulation of the respective function buttons among the control signals received through the receiving unit; and a speed control unit which controls an operation speed of the corresponding heavy equipment based on the control signal according to the manipulation of the speed adjuster among the control signals received through the receiving unit.
