A hold-open device for motor vehicle doors comprises a bracket 10 for mounting on the door 11 of a motor vehicle, a C-shaped high carbon steel torsion bar 15 mounted on the bracket 10 in a preloaded condition and having a laterally extending arm 18 on which is formed a detent 19, which is received in an elongated slot 20 in the bracket 10. A flat hold-open arm 12 pivoted at 25 to the bracket 13 of a door pillar 14, is formed with an elongated guide slot 27 which receives a roller 28 mounted at the end 22 of the torsion bar 15. The free end 29 of the pivot blade 12 is doubled back and carries a striker in the form of a serrated roller 30. When the door is opened, the roller 28 slides along the slot 27 and guides the pivot blade 12 until, in the fully open position, the serrated roller 30 engages and is held by the torsion bar detent 19. The roller 28 is then at the end 32 of the slot 27, which serves as a door stop. A second striker may be provided on the hold-open arm to give an intermediate hold-open position. In a modification (Figures 3, 4 and 5, not shown), the pivot blade 121 is formed with an arcuate guide slot 27', the striker roller 30' is carried on a rivet 31' on the blade 12' and is arranged to cooperate with the detent 19' of the torsion bar 15' at the fully open position. The blade 12' is guided on a slide block 35 carried on a rivet 36 on the bracket 10'. |
