Disclosed are an apparatus and method for managing files using a buffer in a storage space of a video event data recorder. The apparatus includes: a sensing unit configured to process input data; a non-volatile memory including a first area where metadata on the data is stored and a second area where the data is stored; a non-volatile memory buffer configured to buffer the metadata on the data; and an event sensor configured to sense whether a predetermined event occurs. In response to an occurrence of the predetermined event, the metadata on the data buffered to the non-volatile memory buffer may be written in the first area. Therefore, the lifetime of the non-volatile memory may be extended by reducing the number of times of writing in the non-volatile memory.
