In a continuous steel making furnace divided into zones through which movable dish-shaped hearths pass in turn, preheating zones are heated by burners, a penultimate zone in which melting is completed is heated by electrodes and a final refining zone is also heated by electrodes, the hearth being tiltable in the final zone for discharge purposes. An annular furnace has a rotary platform 23 moving carriage-hearths 24 charged with compressed steel scrap through seven zones A-G, zones A-E being fired by burners 25, 26 in side walls 21, 22, zone F being heated by electrodes 28 fed by transformer 27 and refining zone G by electrodes 31 fed by transformer 30. In a modification (Figs. 1-4) the zones are arranged rectilinearly and the carriage-hearths are pushed through.</p> |
