PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gas detector and a gas detection method for eliminating effects due to temperature and humidity and realizing detection with even higher accuracy.SOLUTION: Provided is a gas detector or a gas detection method including the steps of: driving a heater layer drive unit 22 so that a heater layer heats a gas sensing layer to place it in a detectable state and detecting a gas concentration on the basis of output from a gas detection unit 23; reading in a heater layer resistance value from a heater layer resistance detection unit 24 and detecting the temperature in the periphery of the gas sensing layer; reading in the heater layer resistance value from the heater layer resistance detection unit 24 and calculating the humidity in the periphery of the gas sensing layer on the basis of a change in the temperature rise characteristic of a heater layer resistance value after heater power-on; calculating a correction value on the basis of the calculated temperature and humidity; correcting the gas concentration using the correction value; and determining the presence of a gas from the corrected gas concentration.
