Steroids of formula wherein R is a hydrocarbon group and R1 is H or an alkyl group, are prepared by reacting a 6 - hydrocarbonyloxy - 1 - vinyl - 1 - tetralol with cyclopentane-1,3-dione or a 2-alkyl derivative thereof to form a compound of formula and subjecting this to cyclization, under mild conditions.
